Self-assembled CdS architectures with flower-like structures have been synthesized by a mixed solvothermal method using ethylene glycol and oleic acid as the mixed solvent at 160°C for 12 h. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images indicate that the product exists as the hexagonal wurtzite phase and conatins of larger numbers of flower-like CdS architectures with diameters of 1.8–3 μm. The selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern and the high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) image reveal that the grain has better crystallinity. The optical properties of flower-like CdS architectures were also investigated by ultraviolet-visable (UV-vis) and photoluminescence spectroscopy at room temperature. A strong peak at 490 nm is shown in the UV-vis absorption, while an emission at 486 nm and another strong emission at 712 nm are shown in the PL spectrum.

Decoration of C60 nanorods with nickel and their magnetic properties

We studied the coating of C 60 nanorods with nickel by electroless plating method and investigated their magnetic properties. The morphology and structure of the nickel layer coated on C 60 nanorods were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The coated nickel is in the form of nano-sized crystals and becomes a continuous layer as reaction time increases. The hysteresis loop shows a super paramagnetic characteristic similar to that of nanometer-sized nickel particle. These results suggest that the average size of nickel particles on C 60 rods is below 10 nm. It has been investigated in various configurations, such as films, powders, bulk single crystals, and composites with metals, ceramics and polymer matrices, which show outstanding performances in the fields of novel superhard materials, superconductivity, optics, catalysis, etc. Recently, one-dimensional C 60 has also attracted much attention due to their potential applications in the field of nanometer scale devices [6] . The preparation of highly crystalline C 60 with specified geometries is a challenging topic of great interests. We have recently successfully synthesized nanometer C 60 rods using a very simple solution method. The diameter and length of the nanorods can be controlled by adjusting the growth conditions. The nanorods obtained are highly crystalline and single phase [7] . This result has motivated us to further study the fabrication of novel composite C 60 nanorods with other materials to modify their physical properties.Previous studies have shown that the nickel-coated carbon materials have many unique properties. The nickel coating layer enables the carbon materials to resist chemical erosion sequentially, enhances the stability of the composite, and improves the composite properties, such as higher electrical conductivity, magnetism and good adhesion [8] . There are many effective methods of coating nickel on carbon nanomaterials [9]
