Somatosensory temporal discrimination remains intact in tension-type headache whereas it is disrupted in migraine attacks

Abstract: Background and objective Somatosensory temporal discrimination was recently reported as prolonged during migraine attacks, which is consistent with disrupted sensorial perception in migraine. However, knowledge about central sensory processing in tension-type headache is still lacking. This prospective, controlled study aimed to investigate somatosensory temporal discrimination thresholds in tension-type headache. Methods The study included 10 tension-type headache patients, 10 migraine patients and 10 healthy… Show more

“…Considering these results, interictal impairment is proposed to be originated from thalamocortical dysfunction and altered cortical pre‐activation level . On the other hand, 2‐3 times increase in STD thresholds ictally in migraine without aura patients indicates that other mechanisms may play a role during the attack . Migraine attack associated prolongation in temporal discrimination of 2 separate somatosensory stimuli could arise from a transient impairment in the central sensory and cognitive processing …”

[21][22][23] Migraine attack associated prolongation in temporal discrimination of 2 separate somatosensory stimuli could arise from a transient impairment in the central sensory and cognitive processing. [21][22][23] HFOs are low-amplitude, 500-800 Hz wavelets which superimpose on the N20 component of lowfrequency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP).…”
