SOME ANALYTICAL REACTIONS OF ALKYL SULFIDES IN BENZENE AND PURIFIED NAPHTHA SOLUTIONS1

Abstract: This type of reaction represents a novel characteristic of this well-known catalyst. Nickel also catalyzes the cleavage of dibutyl zinc and diphenylmagnesium with the formation of butane and benzene, respectively.

“…In the case of isobutyramide the Kt values for measurements at/2/10-3 = 0.491 and 0.516 were omitted from the averaging as these points had deviations considerably beyond reasonable expectation as determined by Chauvenet's criterion. 7 The general trend of the association constants seems to be toward increasing association with increasing size of the grouping to which the -CONH2 group is attached. Benzamide is apparently a well established exception to this trend and at present the authors can suggest no simple explanation for this exception that is consistent with the rest of the data.…”

“…The stoichiometry for the 5-acylcysteine derivatives is 3 moles of bromine (6 eq)/mole of compound and that for thioacetic acid is 4 moles of bromine/mole of acid. 5-Alkylcysteine derivatives are oxidized with bromine to the sulfoxides (Sampey et al, 1932). The 5-carboxymethyl and S-3-aminoethyl derivatives of cysteine in 50% acetic acid react with 2 eq of bromine to yield probably the corresponding sulfoxides.…”

“…A number of references were also found from a literature search (2,3,(5)(6)(7)(8)10,11,(13)(14)(15)(16)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)29,30,(32)(33)(34)44,46,47,49,(51)(52)(53)(54)(56)(57)(58)(62)(63)(64)(65). All these reactions were identified as potentially worthwhile and were examined in a t least abstract form to determine if the general criteria for the test reaction were met a t least in part.…”
