A short account of work carried out by the authors was given. A full presentation will be published (Strong, Shirling & Passmore, 1967). The summary of this paper is as follows:Food which provided from 2960 to 7880 kcal in excess of requirements was eaten by sixteen subjects, each for a period of 4 days.The proportion of the nutrients lost in the faeces was not increased during overfeeding.The metabolic rates were in no case increased by an amount equivalent to more than 15% of the excess calories. The increase could be attributed to the specific dynamic effect of the extra dietary protein.The gains in weight ranged from 370 to 5460 g/4 days and the calorie equivalent of the weight gained varied from 1 -1 to 10.0 kcal/g. These variations can be attributed to variations in the amount of water retained.Analysis of their respiratory exchanges suggests that most subjects stored from 400 to 1500 g carbohydrate in the tissues, possibly in the form of muscle glycogen. In feeding livestock, three basic questions must be considered: what, how much, and how to feed? The qualitative and quantitative aspects have been studied by many and information has accumulated which, though by no means complete, permits formulation of standards, requirements and allowances. It is only fairly recently that it has become clear that the problem of 'How should one feed' is of basic importance in nutrition, and that understanding of it may help to resolve some of the present controversies about feeding standards and requirements. The problem of how to feed is affected by so many factors that it is virtually impossible to arrive at any hard and fast rules or to make valid general recommendations. All one can do in a brief review is to draw attention to the many aspects of the problem and to some of its implications.In Table I I have listed under three headings, some of the factors which may influence the pattern of feeding : those connected with the animal, those connected with the feed, and those connected with the management. SUMMARYA genotype-environment interaction experiment was carried out on a total of 140 pigs. Three genotypes, produced by mating an inbred boar of each of the Large White, Landrace and Wessex Saddleback breeds to Large White sows, were fattened on conventional rations and on a high growth ration with 10% fat and growth promoting additives.The high growth ration increased growth rate by 34% and improved food conversion ratio by 26% and gave a higher dressing-out percentage, but produced shorter and fatter carcasses. No significant genotype-environment interactions were found for growth rate or food conversion. A significant interaction was found for streak thickness but not for other carcass measurements.

It seems safe to say that all official performance testing and progeny testing schemes for bacon pigs, up to the present, have been based on an implicit assumption that the pigs found to be superior under the management methods at the testing station would also be superior under other systems of management on commercial farms. If consideration is limited to reasonably good standards of management there is probably little danger in this assumption, though there is little direct evidence as yet to support it. The danger of mistakes in the selection of superior genotypes would be more likely to arise if there were systematic differences between the methods of management at the testing stations and on commercial farms. Actually such a difference does occur as regards methods of feeding. At testing stations, the pigs are generally fed more or less to appetite, being given as much as they will readily clear up in two feeds per day in England (N.P.B.A., 1957) and Northern Ireland (Heaney, 1962) and in three feeds per day in Denmark (Clausen & Thomsen, 1957). In the Republic of Ireland (Department of Agriculture, 1960) three feeds per day are given on a scale which must involve little, if any, restriction in the later stages of fattening. Such practices have the object of discovering the strains which become too fat before they reach bacon weights. Many farmers, on the other hand, adopt some form of restriction during the later stages of fattening, with the object of finishing the pigs at the right stage of fatness, and thus of improving the grading of the carcases at the factory.
