Some characteristics and short-term preservation of spermatozoa of Deccan mahseer, Tor khudree (Sykes)

Abstract: Over the years, the natural stocks of Tor khudree (Cyprinidae) have depleted due to anthropogenic activities and hence it is considered a threatened species in India. Several in situ and ex situ conservation strategies have been suggested for the revival of T. khudree stocks. The total volume of milt obtained from hormone-injected (gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue1domperidone) T. khudree were signi¢cantly higher (six to seven times) than that of uninjected ¢sh. The total number of spermatozoa per ¢sh wa… Show more

“…In cold water snow trout species, it is comparatively less up to 59.7 ±16.5 sec . In Tor khudree, spermatozoa motility lasts for 60sec (Basavaraja and Hegde, 2005). Our finding on sperm motility duration (48.16 ± 1.68 sec) for Tor putitora is very close to the earlier reports on coldwater fish species.…”

“…Short-term storage has been considered a useful strategy for preservation of threatened or endangered fish species (Basavaraja and Hegde, 2005;Maria et al, 2006a;Hatipoðlu and Akçay, 2010). Therefore, it may be a worthy strategy for the conservation of the endemic San Pedro Mártir trout (SPMT), Oncorhynchus mykiss nelsoni, which inhabits the streams of the western slopes of Sierra San Pedro Mártir (Ruiz-Campos and Pister, 1995) and is considered the southernmost coastal rainbow trout in North America (Behnke, 2002).…”

“…Activation of salmonid species eggs like rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) could be controlled, and they are more suitable for storage (Goetz & Coffman, ). Although storage approaches of eggs (Ginatullina, Komrakova, & Holtza, ; Goetz & Coffman, ; Holcomb et al, ; Komrakova & Holtz, ) and spermatozoa (Basavaraja & Hegde, ; Kowalski et al, ; Stoss & Holtz, ; Trigo et al, ) have been separately reported, studies on storage of both gametes are limited (Babiak & Dabrowski, ; Jensen & Alderdice, ) even no available data on storage of them used the same medium.…”

“…Successful commercial production of rainbow trout like other fish species is highly related to obtaining and preserving of gametes in good‐quality. Motility percentage, duration of forward motion and curvilinear velocity are the most commonly used parameters for evaluation of spermatozoa quality (Basavaraja & Hegde, ; Billard & Cosson, ). The appearance, size and morphology of eggs could be used to evaluate quality of eggs (Bromage et al, ; Mansour, Lahnsteiner, & Patzer, ).…”
