Aim:This study was designed to elucidate the histoenzymic distribution of enzymes, i.e., phosphatases, oxidoreductases, dehydrogenases, and diaphorases in cecal lymphoid tissue during its development in the prenatal period.Materials and Methods:The study was conducted on cecum of 15 buffalo fetuses ranging from 16 cm curved crown-rump length (CVRL) (100 days) to 100 cm CVRL (full term). The fetuses were categorized into three groups based on their CVRL.Results:In Group I, the distribution of enzymes was uniformly weak in developing villi-like projections in cecum and completely absent from submucosa. In Group II, the enzymes showed a moderate to strong activity in epithelium lining tunica mucosa which progressively decreased as the fetus progresses toward late gestational age. However, the intense activity of enzymes was observed in developing lymphoid tissue in this group. In Group III, distribution of enzymes reduced in tunica mucosa of cecum with advancing age, whereas the intense activity was noticed in the developed lymphoid tissue complex.Conclusion:The distribution of enzymes was completely absent from submucosal region in cecum of Group I as there was no lymphoid tissue development at this age. In Group II, the enzymes showed a moderate to strong activity in epithelium lining tunica mucosa which progressively decreased toward late gestational age but an intense activity was observed in developing lymphoid tissue. In Group III, distribution of enzymes reduced in tunica mucosa with advancing age with intense activity noticed in the developed lymphoid tissue complex.

Résumé Influence de L'«Imarun» sur le thymus et la bourse de Fabricius chez des poules On a examiné l'influence d'un traitement à l' «Imuran» sur les organes lymphatiques centraux (thymus et bourse de Fabricius) chez des poules et sur la réponse immunitaire contre un antigène E. coli. Les résultats ont montré de nets changements dans le métabolisme des protéines (protéines totales, taux en ARN et en ADN) qui sont plus étendus dans la bourse de Fabricius que dans le thymus. L' «Imuran» active les glandes surrénales, ce qui se manifest par une chute du taux de l'acide ascorbique. Un traitement de longue durée avec cette préparation présente un effet immuno‐suppresseur qui détermine une réponse imlunitaire de défense diminuéd vis‐à‐vis d'un antigène E. coli. Summary The effect of Imuran on the Thymus and Bursa of Fabricius in Chickens The effect of Imuran treatment on the central lymphatic organs (thymus and bursa of Fabricius) in chickens as well as on the immune response to E. coli antigen were studied. Data show important changes in the protein metabolism (total protein, RNA and DNA content) which are more pronounced in the bursa of Fabricius than in the thymus. The drug induced in activation of the adrenals suggested by a decrease of their ascorbic acid content. A prolonged treatment with the drug had also an immunosuppressive effect expressed by the lowering of the immuno‐biological capacity of chicken tested against E. coli antigen. Zusammenfassung Die Auswirkungen von Imuran auf den Thymus und die Vursa Fabricus von Hühnern Untersucht wurde der Einfluß einer Imuran‐Behandlung auf die zentrajen lymphatischen Organe (Thymus und Bursa Fabricius) bei Hühnern und die Immunantwort gegen E. coli Antigen. Es traten Veränderungen im Protein Metabolismus (Gesamtprotein, RNS und DNS Gehalt) auf, die in der Bursa deutlicher ausgeprägt sind als im Thymus. Imuran aktiviert die Nebennieren, was sich durch einen Abfall des Ascorbin Säure Gehaltes feststellen ließ. Eine Langzeit‐Behandlung mit diesem Präparat führte zu einem Immun‐suppressiven Effekt, der sich in einer verminderten immunologischen Abwehrkapazität gegenüber E. coli Antigen aus‐drückt. Resumen Los efectos de Imuran sobre el timo y la bolsa de Fabricio en las gallinas Se examinó el influjo de un tratamiento con Imuran sobre los órganos linfáticos centrales (timo y bolsa de Fabricio) en gallinas y la respuesta inmunológica frente a antigeno de E. coli. Aparecieron modificaciones en el metabolismo proteico (proteína total, contenido en ARN y ADN), las cuales eran más manifiestas en la bolsa que en el timo. Imuran activa las anterrenales, lo cual se pudo establecer mediante un descenso del contenido en ácido ascórbico. Un tratamiento a plazo largo con esta especialidad conducía a un efecto inmunosupresivo, que se expresa en una capacidad reducida de defensa inmunológica frente al antígeno de E. coli.

Rats thymectomized at birth gained weight and otherwise developed normally, but were found to be very susceptible to intercurrent infections. Both Arthus reactivity and delayed hypersensitivity to BSA were markedly impaired in rats thymectomized during the first week of life and significantly impaired in rats thymectomized as late as 3 weeks after birth. The inhibition of Arthus reactivity in thymectomized rats was well correlated with their failure to develop significant titers of precipitating or hemagglutinating antibody. However, natural heteroagglutinin titers were not altered in these animals, and no abnormality of serum proteins, including γ-globulin could be detected by paper electrophoresis. The loss of immunologic activity could not be corrected by injecting homogenates of spleen or thymus before and during the sensitization period. Splenectomy at birth did not influence Arthus or delayed reactivity.
