Some Structural Considerations in the Relationship Between M and Empathy

Abstract: After reviewing some of the difficulty around defining empathy, this paper draws attention to three underemphasized structural factors in the empathic tie between self and other. The following distinctions are drawn: (a) empathy vs. fusion with the object: (b) empathy vs. a narcissistic attachment to the object: and (c) empathy vs. an intuitive but fragmented orientation to part-objects. The relationship between Rorschach's M and empathy is reexamined in light of these considerations, and it is concluded that … Show more

“…also examined the form quality of M and the ratio of GHR and PHR. Concerning the form quality of M, Urist (1976) suggested that the form quality of M is associated with empathic understanding. Exner and Erdberg (2005) identified the good form M as representative of interpersonal skills and the poor form M as an indication of difficulties in empathic understanding of others, leading to interpersonal difficulties (Weiner, 1966, and it is interpreted as such in the CS (Exner, 2003).…”

“…As reviews of the literature by Stark (1966) and Urist (1976) attest, there is a long history of Rorschach theorists and researchers associating human movement responses (M) with the capacity for empathy. As Stark notes:…”

“…71-72; see Stark, 1966, p. 244) Both note that Klopfer (Ainsworth & Klopfer 1954) also maintained there is a connection between M and empathy. Despite many early Rorschach luminaries hypothesizing a relationship between human movement (M) and empathy, it appears this has been based more on theory than on empirical study (Urist, 1976). Recent neuroscience research, however, suggests they may have been on the right track.…”
