Sonographic early findings in a case of bladder schistosomiasis

Abstract: Urinary schistosomiasis is a tropical infection with a high endemicity in the developing countries and is included in the list of "Neglected Tropical Diseases". It is caused by a parasitic worm, Schistosoma haematobium, and it has come into the spotlight as a major cause of urogenital disease. Furthermore, it is linked to bladder cancer and it is a predisposing factor for HIV/AIDS. In this case, we describe a bladder schistosomal disease in a young African boy with persistent macroscopic hematuria and its ultr… Show more

“…Ultrasonography is vital in assessing cases of urinary schistosomiasis in detecting the disease and the severity, this demonstrates varying degree of bladder and ureteric and renal affectation of schistosomiasis most commonly wall thickening with hydroureteronephrosis [15][16][17][18]. The patient had ultrasonography, this demonstrated a bladder that appear contracted with circumferential wall thickening more in the base, mucosal thickening and protrusion in to the lumen, presence of irregular echogenic crust in the base with associated suspended mobile echoes in urine.…”

“…Following that, the paired adult Schistosoma haematobium worms migrate to the pelvic venous plexus where they reside and clear their eggs into the host’s urinary bladder [1,3]. These eggs may result in a granulomatous immune response and chronic inflammation, which can lead to bladder wall ulcers, polyps, calcifications, or fibrosis [4,6,7]. As such, the presenting symptoms of urogenital schistosomiasis can be dysuric and/or hematuric in nature [3].…”
