Sorption and Permeation of Aqueous Alkyl Piperazines through Hydrophilic and Organophilic Membranes: A Transport Analysis

Abstract: A detailed analysis of separation of N-methyl piperazine (NMP), Af-ethyl piperazine (NEP), and water was undertaken by the pervaporation technique. A systematic study of sorption and permeation of the aqueous alkyl piperazines through poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), PDMS filled with zeolites NaX and silicalite (SA-5), polyimide (PI), and poly(acrylonitrileco-acrylic acid) (PAN-co-AA) was carried out at different concentrations and temperatures. Organophilic membranes showed highe… Show more

“…Crosslinked PDMS membranes have been tried [10,12] by several workers for selective permeation of organics in low concentration from its aqueous mixtures. Natural rubber has been tried for selective permeation of acetic acid from its aqueous solution in low concentration [13]. However, these membranes showed poor organic selectivity.…”

“…Pervaporation (PV) is a membrane-based separation process suitable for separating liquid mixtures comprising azeotropes and close boiling and temperature-sensitive products (1)(2)(3). Extensive research has been carried out to separate ethanol-water mixtures by PV.…”

“…Permeation factor [eq. (5)] quantifies the effect of one component on the permeation rate of the other component 11. From Figure 8(a), it is observed that for NR membranes, at very low concentration of pyridine in water (∼ 0.5 wt %), permeation factor for all the membranes are much higher than unity signifying positive coupling effect of water on pyridine flux.…”

“…However, most of the organophilic rubber membranes cannot be used for this kind of organic removal from water because of much higher diffusion rate of water molecule through rubber membranes. Crosslinked PDMS membranes when tried for removal of piperzine from its aqueous solution11 resulted in water permeation although the membrane showed preferential piperzine sorption. Among the various elastomeric membranes efficiently cured, unfilled and filled SBR membranes were reported to yield high pyridine selectivity with a reasonable flux 6.…”
