Sorption of Arsenic, Bismuth, Mercury, Antimony, Selenium and Tin on Dithiocarbamate Loaded Polyurethane Foam as a Preconcentration Method for Their Determination in Water Samples by Simultaneous Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry and Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

Abstract: Column solid-phase extraction using dithiocarbamate loaded polyurethane foam was applied to the preconcentration of trace amounts of As, Bi, Hg, Sb, Se and Sn from water samples prior to their measurement by simultaneous ICP-AES and ETAAS. The sorption recoveries of all the analytes were higher than 97% for 150 ml water sample solutions passed through the column with pH ≈ 4.5 and sodium chloride concentration up to 3%. For As, Bi, Hg, Sb and Se, quantitative solid-phase extraction can be achieved over a wide p… Show more

“…The most important improvements are derived from the fact from working in closed systems whose requirements on the laboratory environment for trace analysis are much less stringent, reduced consumption of reagent and high sampling frequencies what justifies the current trend toward an increase in the use of these preconcentration techniques. Arpadjan and co-workers [14,15] applied column solid-phase extraction using dithiocarbamate-loaded polyurethane foam to the preconcentration of lead. Nevertheless, in addition to the need to introduce an organic solvent (which requires a careful control of the experimental parameters) to dissolve the lead-dithiocarbamate complex, this technique is time-consuming because a new column have to be prepared for each experiment.…”

“…compounds on the surface of solid supports which are mainly nano polyurethane forms (Arpadjan et al, 1997), filter paper (Leyden et al, 1975), cellulose (Gennaro et al, 1983) and ion exchange resins (Shamsipur et al, 2005). Silica gel, alumina, magnesia and zirconia are the major inorganic solid matrices used to immobilize the target organic modifiers on their surfaces (Unger, 1979) of which silica gel is the most widely used solid support due to the well documented thermal, chemical and mechanical stability properties compared to other organic and inorganic solid supports (Boudreau and Cooper, 1989).…”

“…[8][9][10][11][12] Potentiometric, spectrophotometric and atomic absorption spectrometric methods are simple and economical, but are not sufficiently sensitive. The other methods may be used for the determination of Pb 2+ at the trace level, but their instruments are expensive, day-to-day maintenance is high and they are not free from various types of inherent interferences.…”
