Sources of Success in Advanced Materials Innovation: The Role of "Core Researchers" in University–industry Collaboration in Japan

Abstract: This article aimed to identify the effect of university-industry collaborations on the innovative performance of firms operating in the advanced materials field, and it proposed an original classification of the research organization partners. The main contribution resides in the estimation of the role played by collaborations with differently experienced corporate researchers. In the advanced materials industry the most effective collaborations are driven by "core researchers," who have been involved in autho… Show more

“…A reciprocal communication (regularly, timely, adequately and accurately) is also beneficial to establish positive expectations about the future behaviour of partners, particularly when the partnership is new (Bstieler et al 2017). Another requirement for a successful collaboration is to find an appropriate 'language' suitable for both partners, because IUCs are often affected by the use of different dictions and styles in the academic and business environments (Baba et al 2010;Gawel 2014).…”

“…As a matter of fact, in this case universities acted as a hub of networks of science and technology, where firms worked closely with academic researchers to develop and commercialize products, benefiting from successful cases of applying new materials in fields where collaborative undertakings had prior knowledge of consumer needs and where the public sector worked as a bridge in developing environmentally friendly technologies (Baba et al 2010). Here, scientific research and product development were integrated through university-industry collaboration and led to a successful innovation in a way particularly appropriate to the advanced materials sector and social needs.…”
