“…In late 2020, the Sarcopenia Diagnostic and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) presented a new data-driven definition of sarcopenia 25 and in 2022 the South Asia Working Action Group on SARCOpenia (SWAG-SARCO) also published a consensus document. 23 This paper describes a Task Force initiative to establish consensus on sarcopenia together with clinical and research guidelines for use in ANZ, the target population for which was adults aged ≥55 years and/or with medical co-morbidities. Two parallel Delphi processes were undertaken with the aim to develop statements with accompanying levels of evidence to guide ANZ-based health professionals and researchers on sarcopenia screening, diagnosis, assessment, prevention, management, and future research.…”

“…Numerous operational definitions for sarcopenia have been developed since the term's inception in 1989. 16 These definitions have been either consensus‐based 1 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 or data‐driven (i.e., the application of machine learning to produce optimal variables and cut‐points). 24 , 25 Recent definitions are detailed in Data S1 .…”

“…The basic calculations of reliability, such as controlling the technical error (TE), or the aggregate of factors that collectively affect the true value of measurement, can give us a piece of important information called the smallest real difference or minimal clinically important difference [ 4 , 5 ]. However, this statistical measurement should be interpreted in conjunction with patient-reported outcomes, common laboratory tests (eg, uric acid) [ 6 ], and specialized laboratory tests (eg, follistatin, myostatin, and IL-6 levels) [ 6 ] beyond primary endpoints (eg, body composition) [ 5 ].…”

“…There is an urgent need to generate sufficient data that clearly defines the problem of sarcopenia among Indians as also from rest of the world especially in the context of diabetes and diabetes risk. The south Asian consensus proposes different criteria to identify sarcopenia among south Asians [30]. Clearly, there is a need for lot more research in this critical area of diabetes which can help understand the association of the two conditions better and help shape effective strategies for prevention and management of diabetes, not only in India but also in rest of the developing and the developed world as well.…”
