Abstract-In index modulation schemes, information bits are conveyed through indexing of transmission entities such as antennas, subcarriers, times slots, precoders, subarrays, and radio frequency (RF) mirrors. Index modulation schemes are attractive for their advantages such as good performance, high rates, and hardware simplicity. This paper focuses on index modulation schemes in which multiple transmission entities, namely, antennas, time slots, and RF mirrors, are indexed simultaneously. Recognizing that such multidimensional index modulation schemes encourage sparsity in their transmit signal vectors, we propose efficient signal detection schemes that use compressive sensing based reconstruction algorithms. Results show that, for a given rate, improved performance is achieved when the number of indexed transmission entities is increased. We also explore indexing opportunities in load modulation, which is a modulation scheme that offers power efficiency and reduced RF hardware complexity advantages in multiantenna systems. Results show that indexing space and time in load modulated multiantenna systems can achieve improved performance.

In fifth generation wireless networks, the escalating teletraffic and energy consumption has necessitated the development of green communication techniques in order to further enhance both the system's spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. In the past few years, the novel index modulation (IM) has emerged as a promising technology that is widely employed in wireless communications. In this paper, we present a survey on IM in order to provide the readers with a better understanding of its principles, advantages, and potential applications. We start with a comprehensive literature review, where the concept of IM is introduced, and various existing IM schemes are classified according to their signal domains, including the frequency domain, spatial domain, time domain and channel domain. Then the principles of different IM-aided systems are detailed, where the transceiver design is illustrated, followed by descriptions of typical systems and corresponding performance evaluation. A range of challenges and open issues on IM are discussed before we conclude this survey.

In this article, a new transmission method named enhanced orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (E-OFDM) is proposed to increase the spectral efficiency (SE) of the OFDM. The proposed method conveys information bits not only by the M-ary symbols but also by the multiple different constellation sets. In the proposed method, we build the sub-blocks by splitting the whole OFDM into pieces. Then, we use different constellation sets in each sub-block and we assign the extra bits to them to increase the SE of the OFDM systems.Consequently, at the same modulation level, the proposed method has higher SE than the conventional OFDM system. The simulation results also show that the proposed method achieves better bit error rate (BER) performance than the conventional OFDM system with tolerable complexity. For example, the proposed method with a sub-block size 2 doubles the SE of the conventional OFDM method with BPSK modulation, and also it has approximately 1.6 dB better BER performance than the conventional OFDM at BER =10 −4 . New constellation designs and receiver algorithm for the detection of additional bits are also presented.
