Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental studies are conducted towards the optimization of the Ranque-Hilsch vortex tubes. Different types of nozzle profiles and number of nozzles are evaluated by CFD analysis. The swirl velocity, axial velocity and radial velocity components as well as the flow patterns including secondary circulation flow have been evaluated. The optimum cold end diameter (d c ) and the length to diameter (L/D) ratios and optimum parameters for obtaining the maximum hot gas temperature and minimum cold gas temperature are obtained through CFD analysis and validated through experiments. The coefficient of performance (COP) of the vortex tube as a heat engine and as a refrigerator has been calculated.
Abstract-In index modulation schemes, information bits are conveyed through indexing of transmission entities such as antennas, subcarriers, times slots, precoders, subarrays, and radio frequency (RF) mirrors. Index modulation schemes are attractive for their advantages such as good performance, high rates, and hardware simplicity. This paper focuses on index modulation schemes in which multiple transmission entities, namely, antennas, time slots, and RF mirrors, are indexed simultaneously. Recognizing that such multidimensional index modulation schemes encourage sparsity in their transmit signal vectors, we propose efficient signal detection schemes that use compressive sensing based reconstruction algorithms. Results show that, for a given rate, improved performance is achieved when the number of indexed transmission entities is increased. We also explore indexing opportunities in load modulation, which is a modulation scheme that offers power efficiency and reduced RF hardware complexity advantages in multiantenna systems. Results show that indexing space and time in load modulated multiantenna systems can achieve improved performance.
In this paper, we present a new multi-antenna modulation scheme, termed as space-time index modulation (STIM). In STIM, information bits are conveyed through antenna indexing in the spatial domain, slot indexing in the time domain, and M -ary modulation symbols. A time slot in a given frame can be used or unused, and the choice of the slots used for transmission conveys slot index bits. In addition, antenna index bits are conveyed in every used time slot by activating one among the available antennas. M -ary symbols are sent on the active antenna in a used time slot. We study STIM in a cyclic-prefixed single-carrier (CPSC) system in frequency-selective fading channels. It is shown that, for the same spectral efficiency and single transmit RF chain, STIM can achieve better performance compared to conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Low-complexity iterative algorithms for the detection of largedimensional STIM signals are also presented.
