Spanish Multicenter Normative Studies (Neuronorma Project): Norms for the Abbreviated Barcelona Test

Abstract: The abbreviated Barcelona Test (a-BT) is an instrument widely used in Spain and Latin American countries for general neuropsychological assessment. The purpose of the present study was to provide new norms for the a-BT as part of the Neuronorma project. The sample consisted of 346 healthy controls. “…To aid this process, projects like the Spanish Multicenter Normative Studies (NEURONORMA) have been adapting English language tests for the Spanish-speaking population [10], [11], [12], [13], [14]. A few neuropsychological screening batteries, adapted for Spanish-speaking individuals, have also been adapted to include age and education adjusted normative values [15], [16], [17], [18], [19]. All of these tests were standardized by administering them to a representative sample of cognitively healthy individuals to establish normative scores.…”

“…Although it is generally accepted that attention and executive measures are impaired faster than memory, language and perceptive domains throughout normal aging, the examination of attention on ACE-III includes orientation, repetition of 3 words, and a serial subtraction task. These items are less influenced by age than other more demanding attentional and executive tasks, such as verbal fluency [13]. …”

“…Language examination included the evaluation of verbal expression and comprehension, repetition, and naming. Tests used for this purpose included the Boston Naming Test, letter/word verbal fluency, ''Cookie Theft'' picture from Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination, and language subtests of the Barcelona Test [17]. The Progressive Aphasia Severity Score (PASS) was used to grade the severity of language impairment [18].…”
