Selective mutism (SM) is a psychiatric condition that is characterized by a failure to speak in specific social situations (e. g., at school) despite speaking normally in other situations (e.g., at home). There is abundant evidence that anxiety, and social anxiety in particular, is a prominent feature of SM, which is the main reason why this condition is currently classified as an anxiety disorder. Meanwhile, there is increasing support for the notion that autism-related problems are also involved in SM. The present study examined the relations between SM and social anxiety, autistic features, and behavioral inhibition to the unfamiliar (i.e., the tendency to react with restraint and withdrawal when confronted with unfamiliar stimuli and situations). Parents of 172 3- to 6-year-old preschool children completed an online survey for measuring the relevant constructs. Results showed that there were positive and statistically significant correlations between SM and social anxiety, autistic features, and behavioral inhibition. Regression analyses revealed that (1) both social anxiety and autistic features accounted for a significant and unique proportion of the variance in SM scores, and (2) that both of these variables no longer made a significant contribution once behavioral inhibition was added to the model. It can be concluded that while the involvement of social anxiety is unambiguous in SM, autism-related problems are also implicated. Furthermore, behavioral inhibition seems to play a key role in the non-speaking behavior of non-clinical young children.

The experience of fear is universal and is among the earliest of all forms of psychopathology, if excessively present. To prevent negative developmental outcomes due to early-onset excessive fears in children, it is important to systematically assess these experiences as early as possible. Using the preschool anxiety scale (PAS), we aimed to assess the frequency and structure of anxiety symptoms of 489 preschool-aged children raised in their biological family and 88 raised in foster care (as a high-risk sample) in Germany. While these young children displayed the same types of anxiety most commonly as young children in other countries, the overall occurrence seems to be reported less often by parents in Germany compared to parents from other countries. Anxiety symptoms clustered into five correlated factors (generalized anxiety, social anxiety, obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), physical injury fear and separation anxiety). Young children in foster care exhibited more OCD and significantly less social anxiety symptoms indicating early repetitive and social disturbances in children in foster care.

Los trastornos de ansiedad son los problemas emocionales con mayor prevalencia enla etapa de Educación Infantil, afectando a un 10-20% de la población en estas edades,siendo persistentes en el tiempo y predictores de problemas posteriores. Es por ello queel presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la presencia de ansiedad en un grupo deestudiantes, tanto desde la perspectiva de las familias como del docente. Para llevar acabo el estudio se ha utilizado la Escala de Ansiedad de Spence en un aula con 19 estudiantesde 3 y 4 años en su versión para familias y para docentes. Los resultados obtenidosindican bajo nivel de acuerdo entre los datos observados desde ambas perspectivas,habiendo acuerdo en cuanto a las subescalas de Ansiedad Social y Miedo por la IntegridadFísica. Además, solamente se han observado puntuaciones por encima de la mediaen lo observado por las familias. Se concluye la importancia de una detección tempranay de la comunicación familia-escuela.
