Spatial and temporal changes in zooplankton abundance, biovolume, and size spectra in the neighboring waters of Japan: analyses using an optical plankton counter

Abstract: Background: An optical plankton counter (OPC) was used to examine spatial and temporal changes in the zooplankton size spectra in the neighboring waters of Japan from May to August 2011. Results: Based on the zooplankton biovolume of equivalent spherical diameter (ESD) in 45 bins for every 0.1 mm between 0.5 and 5.0 mm, a Bray-Curtis cluster analysis classified the zooplankton communities into six groups. The geographical distribution of each group varied from each of the others. Groups with a dominance of 4 t… Show more

“…Is the number of distinct reported observations of size spectra (e.g., subregions or seasonal time points), although each of these frequently is an average of many more sampling time points or individual stations. et al (1993), Noguiera et al (2004), Quinones et al (2003), Rodriguez and Mullin (1986), San Martin et al (2006a, 2006b, Sato et al (2015), Schultes et al (2012), Sheldon et al (1972), Sourisseau and Carlotti (2006), Sprules and Barth (2016), Sprules and Goyke (1994), Sprules and Munawar (1986), Sprules et al (1983), Tarling et al (2012), Wallis et al (2016), Witek and Krajewska-Soltys (1989), Zhou (2006), and Zhou et al (2009Zhou et al ( , 2015.…”

“…Normalized biomass size spectra (NBSS) analysis of zooplankton size-spectrum data from OPC measurements has been used to evaluate the marine ecosystem structure in many locations around the world (Basedow et al, 2010;Matsuno et al, 2012;Sato et al, 2015). NBSS is known to be an index of productivity of marine ecosystems, transfer efficiency to higher trophic levels and predator-prey interactions (Herman and Harvey, 2006;Zhou, 2006).…”

“…However, little information is available on the zooplankton size spectra in the Okhotsk Sea. Additionally, limited information is available for the southern regions during the summer (Sato et al, 2015).…”

“…However, under top-down conditions, since the large-body-sized mesozooplankton dominate, the intercept of the NBSS remains the same, but the slope becomes flattened (Moore & Suthers 2006). From field observations in the neighbouring waters of Japan, the slopes of the NBSS of the zooplankton samples collected by 335-µm mesh quantified by OPC have been reported to vary geographically (Fukuda et al 2012, Sato et al 2015 and seasonally (Hikichi et al 2018). However, because of the scarcity of information on mesozooplankton NBSS, it is difficult to infer general changing patterns of mesozooplankton NBSS along with geographical and seasonal changes.…”
