Spatial Econometric Analysis of Urban and County-level Economic Growth Convergence in China

Abstract: Economic growth convergence, one of the classical assumption in regional economic growth, has been perplexing. There are many empirical studies trying to test if there is regional convergence in China. In this article, we bring new information of the finer spatial scale to the existing literature by using neoclassical convergence analysis, cross-sectional specifications, panel data models, and spatial econometric techniques to test the convergence hypothesis across 2,286 cities and counties in China. Empirical… Show more

“…The convergence refers to the health difference between the backward regions and the developed regions that will gradually narrow and eventually reach the same level. β convergence currently has been extensively applied in studies on convergence, as it can disclose the convergence mechanism [23,24].…”

“…At present, many empirical studies have investigated the impact of agricultural labor transfer on rural economic development, including the potential and trends (Li et al, 2017a), impacts on rural development and their relationships (Long et al, 2016), and from macroscopic and meso perspectives (Mcarthur and Mccord, 2017;Long et al, 2016;Li et al, 2017b). However, relatively few studies have focused on the coupling relationship between agricultural labor transfer and agricultural economy (Li and Fang, 2018), and analyses focusing on both theoretical and empirical levels are relatively scarce. At present, most current research areas are based on provinces and cities, and there is limited research at the county level although the importance of the county economy in China's economic development is becoming increasingly prominent (Yu et al, 2018).…”

“…Another critical aspect of the economy is the emerging "third nature," which includes human capital, R&D activity, level of informatization, and financialization. In this study, the number of students per capita (HR) in ordinary middle schools was used to quantify the level of county human capital (Li & Fang, 2016). The number of telephone users per capita (INF) at the end of the year was used to measure the level of county informatization development.…”

“…It is worthwhile to mention here that the provincial and city-level convergence may hinder the inequality of intra-provincial economic development and mask the nonequilibrium characteristics of intercounty economic differences. Hence, studies based on continuous county-level data across the whole country are emerging (He, Bayrak, et al, 2017;He, Fang, et al, 2017;He, Liao, & Li, 2019;Li & Fang, 2016), which contributes to probing the patterns and trends of county-level economic inequality.…”
