Spatio-Temporal Assessment of Biomass Self-Sufficiency in the European Union

Abstract: Growing concerns over ecosystem degradation, climate change, loss in biodiversity, and rapid depletion of natural resources have urged societies of the developed countries all over the world to encounter the challenge of shifting from fossil-based to bio-based economies. With European Green Deal priorities on a transition to a climate-neutral economy with net-zero GHGs emissions by 2050, projected demand for biomass is 40–100% higher, relative to its supply. To provide an overview on the capacity of the Europe… Show more

“…Lithuania has a high potential of biomass resources from agricultural production and forestry. The latest studies 4 , 12 show that Lithuania is one of the EU countries that is most self-sufficient in biomass, nevertheless, Lithuania's dependence on biomass imports has been increasing for some time.…”

“…The largescale feasibility of bio-based combustion and peak load issues of the electricity grid are not addressed here. Especially for wood pellet combustion, particulate matter emissions are also relevant [60] and the scalability of large scale supply with wood is questionable [61].…”

“…Countries worldwide are facing the challenge of transitioning from fossil-fuel-based energy systems to renewable and sustainable economies due to the multiple threats represented by climate change, energy security problems, biodiversity loss, and rapid depletion of natural resources [1]. In this scenario, the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) [2] has set targets for the EU Member States to reach a 32% renewable energy share by 2030.…”
