Spatiotemporal behavior of excited Xe*(1s4,1s5) and Kr*(1s5) atoms measured by laser-absorption spectroscopy in unit cell of a plasma display panel with Xe–Kr–Ne ternary gas mixture

Abstract: We have studied the effects of ternary gas mixtures of Xe͑10%͒-Kr͑20% and 40%͒-Ne on the luminous efficiency in ac plasma display panels. Spatiotemporal behaviors of near infrared ͑IR͒ emission was measured by an intensified charge-coupled device camera equipped with a narrow bandpass filter and absolute densities of excited Xe * and Kr * atoms in the lowest resonance ͑1s 4 ͒ and metastable ͑1s 5 ͒ levels were measured by a technique of microscopic laser absorption spectroscopy. We have found interesting featu… Show more

“…If we consider the total number of neutrals (helium) N in the main discharge space, He ionization fraction can be estimated. In this case, density of the neutrals n is ∼2.42 × 10 19 cm −3 calculated using n = 3.22 × 10 16 p cm −3 [25,26], where p is the static pressure p s = 1 bar (∼750.06 Torr, input pressure at T = 300 K). From our calculations, N is ∼4.5 × 10 18 (=n/V D ), thus the ionization fraction of the main discharge is very low as ∼ 1.2 × 10 −6 % in the jet system.…”

“…for a given discharge point, where k(t) is the temporal absorption coefficient, H is correction factor, ∆v D is the Doppler width, λ 0 is wavelength at the maximum absorption, and g 1 and g 2 are the statistical weights of the lower and upper levels of the transition [14], [15]. The A 12 is the transition probability of a spontaneous jump from the upper to the lower level per second.…”

“…Here, it is also noted for the high Xe mole fractions above ∼10% that the integrated intensity over the continuum emission wavelength for the 173 nm from the molecular dimers Xe * 2 is much bigger than that of 147 nm for the 1s 4 resonant Xe atoms, which gives direct influence on the luminous efficiency. Hence, we particularly investigated the spatiotemporal behavior of the excited Xe-atom density of the 1s 5 metastable state without taking account of 0093-3813/$25.00 © 2008 IEEE the 1s 4 resonant atoms in this paper according to the various Xe mole fractions of 4%, 7%, 10%, and 15% to Ne gas by the laser-absorption spectroscopy [13]- [15]. The excited Xe-atom density in the 1s 5 metastable state plays a dominant role in luminous efficiency.…”
