Spring maize sowing occurs during a period of low temperature (LT) in Northeast China, and the LT suppresses nitrogen (N) metabolism and photosynthesis, further reducing dry matter accumulation. Diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate (DA-6) improves N metabolism; hence, we studied the effects of DA-6 on maize seedlings under LT conditions. The shoot and root fresh weight and dry weight decreased by 17.70%~20.82% in the LT treatment, and decreased by 5.81%~13.57% in the LT + DA-6 treatment on the 7 th day, respectively. Exogenous DA-6 suppressed the increases in ammonium (NH 4 +) content and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity, and suppressed the decreases in nitrate (NO 3-) and nitrite (NO 2-) contents, and activities of nitrate reductase (NR), nitrite reductase (NiR), glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (GOGAT) and transaminase activities. NiR activity was most affected by DA-6 under LT conditions. Additionally, exogenous DA-6 suppressed the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) decrease, and the suppressed the increases of superoxide anion radical (O 2 � −) generation rate and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2) content. Taken together, our results suggest that exogenous DA-6 mitigated the repressive effects of LT on N metabolism by improving photosynthesis and modulating oxygen metabolism, and subsequently enhanced the LT tolerance of maize seedlings.

The world is faced with significant climate change, rapid urbanization, massive energy consumption, and tremendous pressure to reduce greenhouse gases. Building heating and cooling is one primary source of energy consumption and anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. First, this review presents previous studies that estimate the specific amount of climate change impact on building heating and cooling energy consumption, using the statistical method, physical model method, comprehensive assessment model method, and the combination method of statistical and physical model methods. Then, because the heating and cooling degree days indices can simply and reliably indicate the effects of climate on building heating and cooling energy consumption, previous studies were reviewed from the aspects of heating and cooling degree days indices, regional spatial-temporal variations in degree days and related indices, influencing factors of the spatial distributions of degree days, and the impacts of urbanization on degree days. Finally, several potential key issues or research directions were presented according to the research gaps or fields that need to be studied further in the future, such as developing methods to simply and accurately estimate the specified amounts of climate change impact on building cooling and heating energy consumption; using more effective methods to analyze the daytime, nighttime, and all-day spatial-temporal changes in different seasons in the past and future under various environment contexts by considering not only the air temperature but also the relative humidity, solar radiation, population, etc., and further exploring the corresponding more kinds of driving forces, including the various remotely sensed indices, albedo, nighttime light intensity, etc.; estimating the daytime, nighttime, and all-day impacts of urbanization on heating degree days (HDDs), cooling degree days (CDDs), and their sum (HDDs + CDDs) for vast cities in different environmental contexts at the station site, city, regional and global scales; producing and sharing of the related datasets; and analyzing the subsequent effects induced by climate change on the energy consumption for building heating and cooling, etc.

Although many studies have analyzed the effects of urbanization on temperature changes, the urbanization's effect on temperature change remains controversial. Northeast China is the largest old industrial base in China, which experienced a rapid urbanization in the past decades. Under the background of climate change, understanding the changes of surface air temperature and urbanization effects on temperature changes in the Northeast China is important to predict climate change in China. By analyzing the historical climate data, our results suggested that minimum temperature (Tmin) over the Northeast China increased significantly (0.40°C decade-1) from 1960 to 1989, but showed no significant change (-0.02°C decade-1) during 1990-2016. Due to slight change of maximum temperature (Tmax), the diurnal temperature range (DTR) showed a significant decreasing trend before 1989 (-0.34°C decade-1), but reached a stable level after 1990 (-0.06°C decade-1). In Northeast China, urbanization had a significant warming effect on Tmin during the night-time, but had different effects on Tmax during the daytime under the different changes of solar radiation before and after 1990. There were moderate warming effects of urbanization on Tmax during the solar dimming period of 1960-1989, but weak cooling effects on Tmax during the solar stable period after 1990. Due to obvious warming effect of urbanization on Tmin, urbanization in Northeast China tends to result in an increase of mean temperature but a decrease of DTR.
