This study investigated insect diversity of olive (Olea europaea Linnaeus (Oleaceae)) groves grown in arid and semiarid climates in northeastern Algeria. Using several sampling techniques, a total of 1326 insect specimens were collected and identified into 151 species, 124 genera, 65 families, and 10 orders. Hymenoptera and Coleoptera were quantitatively the most abundant, whereas the dominant functional feeding groups were phytophages then predators. The entomofauna included several olive pests such as Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae), Parlatoria oleae (Colvée) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), Euphyllura olivina (Costa) (Hemiptera: Liviidae), and Liothrips oleae Costa (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae). Although insect diversity parameters recorded for both observed and expected species richness were higher in olive groves grown under semiarid compared with arid climate, the completeness rate of species richness obtained using the nonparametric incidence estimators was higher in arid olive groves. Generalised linear models showed that the number of individuals and species richness varied significantly between climates (P < 0.01), whereas the variation of the rest of diversity parameters was not significant. Diversity traits of insect assemblage of each climatic region were positively correlated. Besides, the Mantel permutation test revealed similar patterns (r = 0.91, P < 0.0001) between correlation matrices of the two climates. When increasing the number of samples, species richness extrapolation revealed that diversity is expected to increase by 130% in olive groves grown under arid climate and 93% in semiarid climate. These increases are related to continuous appearance of rare and scarce insects as demonstrated by species rarefaction curves. Even with high evenness values of insect communities, similarity was low between climate indicating the rarity and scarcity of populations.

This study aimed to assess the occurrence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in annatto (Bixa orellana L.) cultivars and their response to AMF inoculation using biometric parameters. The occurrence surveys were conducted in annatto fields in three municipalities from Pernambuco Forest Zone: Lagoa de Itaenga, Gloria de Goitá, and Vitoria de Santo Antão, and in four cultivars (Red Piave, Green Piave, Red Peruvian Paulista, and Green Peruvian Paulista). In a greenhouse, biometric parameters of annatto seedlings of Red Piave, Red Peruvian Paulista, Embrapa-36, and Embrapa-37 cultivars inoculated with AMF isolated from annatto fields. The Red Piave cultivar exhibited greater root colonization than the Green Peruvian Paulista in the Lagoa de Itaenga and Vitoria de Santo Antão municipalities. The cultivar Red Piave showed a more beneficial association with AMF in plants and soil than cultivar Green Peruvian Paulista did, in both Lagoa de Itaenga and Vitoria de Santo Antão. AMF inoculation was effective in promoting the growth of annatto plants, particularly those inoculants with S. heterogama and C. etunicatum.

A olivicultura foi introduzida no Brasil por volta do século XIX, em algumas regiões com condições ambientais propícias, como Sul e Sudeste. Porém, o cultivo não prosperou por falta de estudos relacionados às exigências de solo, clima e outros fatores que afetam diretamente a produtividade desta cultura. Assim, pela baixa produção comercial, o país necessita importar todo azeite de oliva e azeitona de países tradicionalmente produtores. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão bibliográfica sobre os trabalhos que abordam desenvolvimento e produção de oliveiras, com enfoque no Brasil, enfatizando aqueles que envolvem aspectos relacionados às interações com microrganismos, como fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) e rizobactérias, grupos esses de reconhecido efeito no crescimento e desenvolvimento de plantas. Verificou-se que vários estudos têm sido realizados no exterior abordando FMAs e rizobactérias em oliveiras, com resultados expressivos no que se referem ao crescimento e desenvolvimento de plantas coinoculadas, além de melhorias de resistência a metais pesados e fitopatógenos, tanto em condições de viveiro quanto em campo. No entanto, no Brasil, apesar de grande potencial de cultivo de oliveira, principalmente em função de sua extensão territorial e riqueza climática e biológica, poucos estudos têm sido conduzidos abordando essas relações microbiológicas, o que podem dificultar o entendimento e o crescimento da olivicultura no país.
