Specialized CFD Grid Generation Methods for Near-Field Sonic Boom Prediction

Abstract: Ongoing interest in analysis and design of low sonic boom supersonic transports requires accurate and efficient Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools. Specialized grid generation techniques are employed to predict near-field acoustic signatures of these configurations. A fundamental examination of grid properties is performed including grid alignment with flow characteristics and element type. The issues affecting the robustness of cylindrical surface extrusion are illustrated. This study will compare three… Show more

“…Care was taken to ensure that the relative grid spacing distribution remained as similar as possible for the unstructured family of grids. The number of nodes and elements approximately doubled, and a characteristic grid spacing decreased by the cube root of one half between successive grids in the series [66]. Baseline grid spacing recommendations are provided for the C25F and C25P in Appendix A: C25D and C25F Grid Generation Guidelines.…”

“…1. Park et al 12 reviews specialized grid methods that have been developed to calculate near-field pressure waveforms for sonic boom analysis. These methods have been shown to be accurate for simple configurations but can introduce an unacceptable level of variation for more complex and realistic vehicles, 13 especially as the corresponding sonic boom loudness metrics get lower.…”
