Species of Capital in the Political Elite

Abstract: Species of Capital in the Political Elite"'Who governs'? The Chilean elite is famous for its staying power and the control they have exercised over the country and the state for over 200 years. Recent events in that country make this question even more relevant and important. Combining deep empirical work and wonderful theoretical insights, this book should serve as the foundation for studying the Chilean elite (and others in Latin America) for many years.

“…In particular, this article explores the evolution of the acceptance of homosexuality in Chile between 1998 and 2018 and investigates the role played by several individual features identified as key variables in the literature (gender, location, birth cohort, age, level of education, religiosity, political orientation, and social capital). Using the 1998 and 2018 waves of the ISSP (ISSP Research Group 2000, 2020, we perform an econometric decomposition that allows disentangling the relevance of changes in individual socioeconomic variables and the importance of the evolution of attitudes due to each characteristic. Our results suggest that changes in observed individual-level socioeconomic characteristics explain roughly 11.0 percent of the shift in attitudes.…”
