“…The functional assay employed in this work was homotypic adhesion between stable transfectants of CHO-derived LR-73 cells in suspension. Evidence involving binding of purified CEA molecules to CEA transfectant cells and colorectal carcinoma cells (43,44) or immobilized purified CEA (Fuks and Stanners, unpublished) 4 strongly favors the view that this adhesion is mediated by homophilic bonds between antiparallel CEA molecules on apposite cell surfaces. The model building analysis employed here utilized the known structure of CD2 as a guide and indicated that region 1, G 30 YSWYK, and the adjacent region 2, N 42 RQII, are surface exposed.…”

“…In fact, the specific binding of neisserial Opa protein to CEACAM was reported to be mediated through the N-domain (23,24). The involvement of the N-domain in homo-and heterophilic adhesions between CEA family members has been also demonstrated by using chimeric and deleted constructs (16,18,25) or by using mAbs recognizing the N-domain (17,26,27). In the case of CEACAM1 (BGP), Teixeira et al proposed N-domain-Ndomain interaction (25).…”

“…Certain colorectal carcinoma cell lines that express CEA on their surface will bind to CEA-coated plastic (liostcttcr et ul.. 1990u,h;Levin and Griffin, 1991;Levin et d., 1992). Because CHO cells transfcctcd with functional CEA also adhere to CEA-coated plastic, a homophilic interaction may take place between the CEA expressed on the cells and the CEA on the plastic.…”

“…More recently Zhou et al (1990) found that CEA-and NCA-producing transfectants can form he terotypic aggregates but will not aggregate with other immunoglobulin supergene family members, such as NCAM, that are not in the immediate CEA gene family. Hostetter et al (1990 a,b) and Levin and Griffin (1991) also demonstrated that human colorectal carcinoma cells bind to CEA attached to a solid surface. These experiments suggest that CEA and NCA are homophilic binding proteins that mediate homotypic cell aggregation.…”
