The problem of structural instability quasi-biennial oscillations (QBO) of the zonal velocity in the equatorial stratosphere is studied in the paper. Based on analytic studies and numerical simulations, estimates for the stability bound of the zero solution are obtained for vertical diffusion and vertical transport velocities using the low-parameter model of QBO formation via the interaction of planetary waves with the mean flow. Based on numerical experiments with the model of the general circulation of the atmosphere developed by the Institute of Numerical Mathematics of the RAS and the results obtained for low-parameter models, it is shown that vertical diffusion is the key process in the formation of circulation parameters of the equatorial atmosphere.
