Spectral Properties of Fermi Blazars and their Unification Schemes

Abstract: We use the distributions of spectral indices (αv ) of a large homogenous sample of Fermi-detected blazars to re-investigate the relationship between flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and subclasses of BL Lac objects (BL Lacs). We compute the broadband synchrotron and Compton spectral indices from radio-to-X-ray and X-ray to y-ray bands, respectively. Analyses of our data show continuity in the distributions of the spectral indices from FSRQs to HSP through LSP and ISP subclasses of BL Lacs. We find from y-ra… Show more

“…We observed the existence of a selection of high frequency-peaking FSRQs (about 14 %) that have the same value of parameter in SS-CS and IC-SS planes. These few FSRQs are occupying the parameter space in a way that agrees with the unification scheme for radio galaxies, BL Lacs and FSRQs, (Iyida et al 2020;Odo & Aroh 2020). Actually, the sequence from Seyfert galaxy at low SS-CS plane to FSRQs at high SS-CS plane is in agreement with the evolution based unification scheme for Seyfert galaxy-BL Lacs-FSRQs unification such that at low synchrotron and inverse Compton energies, jetted AGNs are Seyfert galaxies though can metamorphose through BL Lac subclasses to FSRQs.…”

“…Thus, the continuous emission of blazars is observed to vary over many orders of magnitude in spectrum. Some authors modeled some parameters that depend on the broadband properties to study blazar unification scheme (Nalewajko & Gupta 2017;Iyida et al 2020). Of these proxy parameters often used is the composite spectral indices (a ij ), defined mainly between two wavebands (Iyida et al 2020) as:…”

“…Urry and Padovani 1995;Ghisellini et al 2009;Sbarrato et al 2014), relativistic beaming and orientation effects between blazars and RGs are attracting the attention of researchers, producing new results (e.g. Fan et al 2011;Pei et al 2010;Iyida et al 2020;Ye and Fan, 2020). Specifically, current studies using the Fermi-LAT data suggest that HBLs -LBLs -IBLs -FSRQs sequence can be extended to RGs (e.g.…”
