“…Literature survey reveals that tertiary nitrogen in clomipramine hydrochloride is capable of forming ion-pair complexes with various dyes and reagents such as azocarmine-G, naphthalene blue and naphthalene blue black, 15 thymol blue, 16 orange I, orange II, croceine orange, lithol Red, fast Red A, 17 and picryl chloride. 18 The reaction of clomipramine and alizarin red S has not been investigated so far. In the present study clomipramine hydrochloride was found to react with alizarin red S at pH 1.99 resulting in the formation of fluorescent ion-pair complex which is most suitably extracted in chloroform.…”

“…The assay procedure of the drug in dosage forms is official in British Pharmacopoeia, 2 and United States Pharmacopoeia. 3 Clomipramine has been determined in its pharmaceutical dosage forms and biological fluids by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), [4][5][6] gas chromatography (GC), 7 capillary gas chromatography, 8 liquid chromatography (LC), 9,10 capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE), 11,12 flow injection analysis (FIA), 13 spectrophotometry, [14][15][16][17][18][19] and spectrofluorimetry. 20,21 These methods were associated with some major drawbacks such as inadequate sensitivity, time-consuming, tedious, and dedicated to sophisticated and expensive instruments.…”

“…The vast commercial success of these medicinal agents has made the chemistry of dibenzazepines to become a major area of research in heterocyclic chemistry and an important branch of commercial importance in pharmaceutical sciences 1 ' 3 . Many contemporary analytical methodologies, including titrimetry, 7 UV-visible spectrophotometry 8 ' 16 , voltammetry 17 ' 21 , ion selective electrodes 22 , potentiometry 23 ' 24 , amperometry 2425 , radioimmunoassay 26 , and chromatographic methods 27 " 28 have been utilised to determine these drugs in different matrices. However, these methods have proved to be deficient with respect to specificity, sensitivity, simplicity, and or short analysis time.…”

“…The reported chromatographic techniques [7][8][9][10][11][12][13] require expensive experimental set-up, requires sophisticated instrumentation [15] and involvement of scrupulous experimental conditions which are not affordable in every laboratory for routine analysis; Whereas the reported spectrophotometric methods were associated with some major drawbacks such as, lesser sensitivity [16][17][23][24][25][26], tedious extraction procedures [16][17]26], maintenance of strict experimental conditions [16,17,21] and time consuming [18,20,27]. For these reasons, the development of a new, simple, rapid, selective, sensitive and inexpensive spectrophotometric method that overcomes the drawbacks of the existing methodologies was very essential.…”
