Spectroscopy of a fractional Josephson vortex molecule

Abstract: In long Josephson junctions with multiple discontinuities of the Josephson phase, fractional vortex molecules are spontaneously formed. At each discontinuity point a fractional Josephson vortex carrying a magnetic flux $|\Phi|<\Phi_0$, $\Phi_0\approx 2.07\times 10^{-15}$ Wb being the magnetic flux quantum, is pinned. Each vortex has an oscillatory eigenmode with a frequency that depends on $\Phi/\Phi_0$ and lies inside the plasma gap. We experimentally investigate the dependence of the eigenfrequencies of a … Show more

“…The latter requires LJJs which are significantly longer than the effective Josephson penetration depth L JJ >> λ J,eff while the width is ideally in the sub-µm range W JJ << λ J,eff [19]. As proposed in [4,5] creation of fractional vortices or so-called κ-vortices [2][3][4][5]20] can be achieved by injection and extraction of a dc-injector current I inj through tiny feed lines (w inj << λ J,eff ) separated by dX ≈ W JJ . Various devices based on such injector designs are conceivable including qubits [12] or meta-materials [15].…”

“…ver the last few decades window-type (or overlap-type) Josephson junctions (JJs) have emerged as the most reproducible and controllable fabrication process for fewjunctions devices such as SQUIDs [1], long Josephson junctions (LJJ) [2][3][4][5] as well as multi-junction devices like RSFQ circuits [6][7][8] or voltage standards [9]. To increase the performance of the devices the critical-current density j c is usually increased [10][11][12] while in turn the lateral dimensions are minimized.…”

“…In this paper, we propose a 'real-time' experiment for Josephson vortices based on the experimental setup described in [16]. Furthermore, we show how our system can be tuned from a classical regime, where no quantum oscillations are observable, into the quantum regime.…”

“…In the present paper we investigate a "molecule" [16] consisting of two fractional vortices in which the topological charge of the vortices can be tuned electronically by changing κ. For appropriate parameters of the LJJ we obtain an electronically tunable macroscopic quantum system which is suitable for the experimental observation of coherent quantum oscillations.…”
