Spectroscopy of new brown dwarf members ofρ Ophiuchi and an updated initial mass function

Abstract: Aims. To investigate the universality hypothesis of the initial mass function in the substellar regime, the population of the ρ Ophiuchi molecular cloud is analysed by including a new sample of low-mass spectroscopically confirmed members. To that end, we have conducted a large spectroscopic follow-up of young substellar candidates uncovered in our previous photometric survey. Methods. The spectral types and extinction were derived for a newly found population of substellar objects, and its masses estimated by… Show more

“…Previous mid-IR studies of ρ Ophiuchi have classified 31 brown dwarfs as Class II Natta et al 2002;Testi et al 2002;Barsony et al 2005;McClure et al 2010;Alves de Oliveira et al 2012). We detect 38% of the Class II brown dwarfs in our deep Herschel observations.…”

“…The existence of disks around several of these objects has been previously established from the detection of mid-IR excess (e.g. Bontemps et al 2001;Natta et al 2002;Testi et al 2002;Barsony et al 2005;McClure et al 2010;Alves de Oliveira et al 2012). The T Tauri disk population of this cluster has been studied by previous missions extending to the far-infrared regime (e.g.…”

“…Nowadays, more than 40 planetary mass companions have been detected using DI 1 . Most of them are found orbiting at large separations ( 50 AU) around young A&A 587, A58 (2016) and young nearby associations (Lucas et al 2001;Kirkpatrick et al 2006;Lodieu et al 2008;Rice et al 2010;Alves de Oliveira et al 2012Allers & Liu 2013;Gagné et al 2014a,b;Bonnefoy et al 2014a;Dawson et al 2014;Zapatero Osorio et al 2014). Among them, 2MASSW J1207334-393254 b (hereafter 2M1207b; Chauvin et al 2004), 2MASS J01225093-2439505 b (Bowler et al 2013), and VHS J125601.92-125723.9 b (Gauza et al 2015) appear to lie at the transition between the cloudy L-type and cloudless T-type dwarfs.…”

“…This is the goal of a large programme (P.I. J. Bouvier) we are conducting at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), designed to uncover the substellar population of various nearby young clusters and compare their IMF and minimum mass for brown dwarf formation (Burgess et al 2009;Alves de Oliveira et al 2010;Alves de Oliveira et al 2012;Spezzi et al 2012).…”
