Spectrum of Flurodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computerized Tomography Findings in Tumors and Tumor-Like Conditions of the Musculoskeletal System

Abstract: Bone and soft-tissue tumors display a wide range of metabolic activity on flurodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (FDG PET/CT) imaging due to their varying histopathological features. Several benign tumors show high FDG uptake similar to that seen in malignant lesions and their metabolic characteristics can overlap. Certain benign tumors can potentially undergo malignant transformation and FDG PET/CT can play an important role in detecting malignant change. The intensity of metab… Show more

“…FDG uptake is higher in soft tissue sarcomas than in benign tumors 20 . However, even in benign tumors, high histiocyte or lymphocyte infiltration may lead to high FDG uptake and overdiagnosis 21 . DF is known as one of the benign soft tissue tumors with high histiocytic and lymphoplasmacytic infiltration 22 .…”

“…20 However, even in benign tumors, high histiocyte or lymphocyte infiltration may lead to high FDG uptake and overdiagnosis. 21 DF is known as one of the benign soft tissue tumors with high histiocytic and lymphoplasmacytic infiltration. 22 Because of these worrisome clinical and radiological features, we suspected malignancy before preoperative biopsy.…”
