“…has been recorded in other studies. Minimum discomfort signs have been recorded in this study in comparison with other studies in beef bulls(Falk et al, 2001;Whitlock et al, 2012) and biochemical alterations should be a reliable indicator of stress response and habituation to EE(Ja'afaru et al, 2019;Abril-Sánchez, Freitas-de-Melo, Beracochea, et al, 2017; Damián and Ungefeld, 2011). Furthermore, the estimation of serum creatine kinase (CK)is a reliable indicator of muscle damage due to EE (Damián and TA B L E 5 b Static velocity (%) 46.38 ± 4.66 a 60.52 ± 3.71 b 45.17 ± 3.67 a 57.60 ± 2.30 b Note: a,b Indicate significant differences within rows (p < 0.05), n = number of ejaculates.…”

“…Bulls which exhibited a severe reaction to EE are less likely to undergo successful EE than those with mild or moderate reactions. Although minimal discomfort signs were exhibited externally, the study of changes in physiological (rectal temperature, heart rate and respiration rate), endocrine (cortisol and progesterone), haematological (haematocrit and haemoglobin) and biochemical alterations should be a reliable indicator of stress response and habituation to EE (Ja’afaru et al, 2019; Abril‐Sánchez, Freitas‐de‐Melo, Beracochea, et al, 2017; Damián and Ungefeld, 2011). Furthermore, the estimation of serum creatine kinase (CK) is a reliable indicator of muscle damage due to EE (Damián and Ungefeld, 2011).…”

“…This agrees with our results, given that we found only small differences between extenders. Nevertheless, we must be careful comparing our results with that study, since these authors used semen obtained by trans-rectal ultrasonic-guided massage of the accessory sex glands (TUMASG) [16]. Semen obtained by non-physiological means presents very different characteristics, specifically epididymal spermatozoa as they do not come into contact with the seminal plasma.…”

“…Transrectal ultrasonic‐guided massage of the accessory sex glands (TUMASG) is a technique recently developed for semen collection in small ruminants, in which semen cannot be collected with an artificial vagina. TUMASG was initially used to collect semen in elephants ( Elephas maximus ; Schmitt & Hildebrandt, 1998), and later in aoudad (Santiago‐Moreno et al, 2013), Iberian ibex ( Capra pyrenaica ), mouflons ( Ovis musimon ; Ungerfeld et al, 2015) and goat bucks ( Capra hircus ; Abril‐Sánchez et al, 2017). It is a practical alternative to electroejaculation, as it is less invasive, and thus, it is less harmful to animal welfare (Ungerfeld et al, 2015).…”
