Spermidine in dementia

Abstract: Previous studies have highlighted that spermidine has the ability to trigger the important process of dissolving amyloid-beta plaques by autophagy. This manuscript focuses on the correlation of serum spermidine levels between age and between performance in mini-mental state examinations. It will serve as a premise for an ongoing multicentric placebo-controlled study, which focuses on the effect of oral spermidine supplementation on memory performance. Memory tests were carried out on 80 subjects aged 60-96 yea… Show more

“…Whether exercise-induced oxidative stress might exert protective effects through the activation of antioxidant response mechanisms in this population remains to be determined. Spermidine is a polyamine metabolite (50) that has been implicated in cognitive function and AD (116,117) and may alleviate oxidative stress. Increased dietary intake of spermidine is considered beneficial for brain function in people with dementia (116).…”

Increased dietary intake of spermidine is considered beneficial for brain function in people with dementia (116). Consistent with our findings of other antioxidant metabolites, spermidine was diminished in the EPA group.…”

“…A clear correlation was established between spermidine concentration and improvement in cognitive performance in patients with mild to moderate dementia. Simultaneous dietary administration of 200 µg putrescine, 900 µg spermidine, and 500 µg spermine (total 1600 µg) per day for 12 months in elderly people had the most effective positive effect on cognitive processes [ 89 , 90 ].…”
