Spindle cell/pleomorphic lipoma of the cheek: A case report

Abstract: We report a rare case of spindle cell/pleomorphic lipoma (SL/PL) in a 76‐year‐old woman who visited our hospital because of a mass on her right cheek. She presented with no other abnormal symptoms. We observed a 22‐mm wide, elastic, painless, yellow mass on her right cheek that was tumefactive, and the boundary between it and the surrounding tissue was relatively clear. With the patient under general anesthesia, we performed surgery to remove the tumor, which was identified by pathological examination as SL/PL… Show more

“…3 ASCLT has similar histopathological features to spindle-shaped lipoma, and immunohistochemical staining is effective in obtaining a definite diagnosis. 4 In ASCLT, the presence of CD34 is often observed in tissue samples, which is helpful for diagnosis. [1][2][3]5 Mariño et al have reported that the diagnostic sensitivity of CD34 for ASCLT is 64% and that MDM2 is not observed in tissue samples in ASCLT.…”

“…Lipomas are termed giant when they are larger than 5 cm, and 75% of cases are symptomatic [9]. Pleomorphic lipoma accounts for 1.5% of all lipomas [10]. In our case, the diameter of the pleomorphic lipoma was more than 10 cm.…”

“…Pleomorphic lipoma is very di cult to diagnose, and is not easy to distinguish from highly specialized liposarcoma [10]. The diagnosis of pleomorphic lipoma is mainly based on CT, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and histopathology.…”
