Spiral involutes and their application in gear transmission

Abstract: Involute helical gears mesh based on the intersections of involute helicoids. However, spiral involutes on the tooth surface do not participate in meshing directly. A new type of gear drive, the spiral involute gear drive, is proposed that works on the contact of spiral involutes. The generation of tooth profile is introduced in detail. Through relative-stagnation method, spiral involutes prove to have conjugation characteristics. To testify whether the transmission ratio of cylindrical spiral involute gears i… Show more

“…According to the design idea of the tooth surface of pure rolling variable transmission ratio, the mathematical model of the tooth surface of herringbone involute helical gear is established. 28,29 Based on the meshing principle of variable transmission, the tooth face of rack variable transmission ratio with herringbone involute helical gear is established. In coordinate system s 1 , the equation of the left flank of the herringbone involute helical gear is…”

“…Besides, invariables θ1 and θ2 indicate that the contact path is corresponding to the normal profiles with inclined angle θ1 and θ2 on the rack cutter. In this case, the gear pair works on meshing of engaged spatial curves called spiral involutes, 25 which still have the characteristics of involutes, so the transmission error is zero. The torus involute gear set can be regarded as insensitive to misalignment assembly errors.…”

“…From differential geometry, the term r 1ð1Þ 2 in equation (17), represents the tangent direction of À 1 . Therefore, after equations (16) and (17) are synthesized, it can be concluded that the tangent directions of À 1 and À 2 are not the same at the instantaneous contact point. However, for the spiral bevel gears of continuous pure rolling contact, the relative slide does not exist, which means…”

“…16 proposed a new gear generating method for the spiral bevel gear with spherical involutes tooth curves. Liu and Huang 17 proposed so-called spiral involute gears. Wang and Zhang 18 introduced the tensor analysis method to research the curvature relationships of conjugate surfaces and applied it for the face-milled spiral bevel gears of local bearing contact.…”
