Splash: A Software Tool for Stereotactic Planning of Recording Chamber Placement and Electrode Trajectories

Abstract: While computer-aided planning of human neurosurgeries is becoming more and more common, animal researchers still largely rely on paper atlases for planning their approach before implanting recording chambers to perform invasive recordings of neural activity, which makes this planning process tedious and error-prone. Here we present SPLASh (Stereotactic PLAnning Software), an interactive software tool for the stereotactic planning of recording chamber placement and electrode trajectories. SPLASh has been develo… Show more

“…The TRACULA processed data [16] yielded significantly higher FA values in the MCI-highEF group in the inferior and superior longitudinal fasciculi bilaterally, and the MCI-lowEF group showed greater RD values in the corpus callosum, left corticospinal tract, the bilateral superior and inferior longitudinal fasciculus, and the right uncinate fasciculus. The p-values have been corrected for multiple comparisons using the number of tracts.…”

“…The DTI data were preprocessed using Freesurfer’s dt_recon function, which performed eddy/motion correction on the DTI files [16]. Freesurfer’s bbregister function registered the structural data files to the DTI files [17].…”

“…This approach brings as major advantage the possibility to apply personalized surgical procedures and coordinates in three dimensions (18). The inherent disadvantage of this approach is the utilization of two different devices, the imaging system and the stereotaxic frame, using consequently, two different reference systems.…”

“…They also do not incorporate the patient test information into their system, which is required for a sufficient level of accuracy and confidence. Sperka et al also presented a system to improve the planning phase for stereotaxic surgery [35]. Lastly, the use of fMRI data together with other modalities was investigated in the context of stereotactic interventions on macaques [25].…”
