Splinting of Longitudinal Fracture: An Innovative Approach

Abstract: Trauma may result in craze lines on the enamel surface, one or more fractured cusps of posterior teeth, cracked tooth syndrome, splitting of posterior teeth, and vertical fracture of root. Out of these, management of some fractures is of great challenge and such teeth are generally recommended for extraction. Literature search reveals attempts to manage such fractures by full cast crown, orthodontic wires, and so forth, in which consideration was given to extracoronal splinting only. However, due to advancemen… Show more

“…It has been shown to allow for some but limited biofilm growth compared to other suture materials, especially multifilament ones [40]. Currently, new splint systems have been introduced into the market such as Rebbond [41,42], OW [43], and TTS [7,8], and while practitioners differ in their choice, the common agreement is that they should be easy to apply and remove, be esthetic, and facilitate hygiene. However, bacterial growth on these newer systems has not been properly evaluated before.…”

“…[3,4] Few cases of injury resulted from trauma to anterior teeth by sudden impact from hand pump handles have been reported from rural parts of India. [5] Increased overjet, inadequate lip coverage of the upper anterior teeth, predispose a person for these injuries. [6] Trauma to the tooth may lead to complete avulsion of the tooth, crown, or root fractures and luxation or concussion injuries, for which the patient seeks timely dental care.…”
