“…Non-traumatic intracranial extradural hematomas (EDHs) are rare, and reports have associated their etiology with infections [3,9,14,20,25,29,31,33,37], coagulation disorders [39,43], hemodialysis, cardiac surgery [28,38], neoplasms [6,15,18,22,41], and vascular malformations [35]. The first case report of a spontaneous EDH was described in 1951 [37].…”

“…The risk is that the dura mater may become progressively stripped from the inner table of Spontaneous Epidural Hematoma Secondary to Sphenoid Sinusitis the skull by extension of pus, exudates, and air. 1,2,4,5,[8][9][10][11][12] In our patient, the inflammation probably spread through the bone defect to cause local arteritis and rupture of the blood vessels, and progressive detachment of the dura mater led to recurrent bleeding and the formation of the epidural hematoma. Epidural hematoma may show rapid onset in some cases, but progress more slowly in others.…”

“…In the spine, such hemorrhages have been associated with pregnancy [16], multiple myeloma [17], Paget disease [18], panarteritis nodosa [19], and following tissue plasminogen activator or heparin therapies [2,3]. Intracranially, spontaneous epidural hemorrhage may occur in the presence of metastases [20,21], infection [4,5,22], or vascular lesions such as middle meningeal artery aneurysms [1] or diploic venous thrombosis [23].…”

“…For example, patients receiving high-dose intravenous heparin during cardiac bypass surgery may suffer a spontaneous bleed [2,3]. Such hematomas may also occur in patients with craniofacial infections [4], sinusitis [5], or vascular anomalies [1]. Spontaneous epidural hematomas have also been reported in patients undergoing ventricular drainage for hydrocephalus [6].…”
