Spontaneous Resolution of Solitary Rectal Ulcer Syndrome During Pregnancy: Report of a Case

Abstract: Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome is a rare condition that is associated with disordered defecation and is thought to be an ischemic injury from repeated mucosal trauma. Treatment is designed to alleviate the underlying defecatory problems and is only moderately successful. We report an interesting case of solitary rectal ulcer syndrome in a young woman, which was resistant to standard nonoperative management but completely resolved during two pregnancies only to recur when she was not pregnant, and we suggest a … Show more

“…For example, there is a case report of a solitary rectal ulcer in a woman resolving during pregnancy and recurring after delivery, which may point to a hormonal factor. 19 Failure of corrective surgery to resolve symptoms of SRUS brings about another uncertainty in understanding possible factors involved in the pathogenesis of this condition. 20 Overall, it seems that chronic mucosal injury and ischemic trauma are the main mechanisms though further studies may shed more light on the process.…”

“…Mucosal ulceration is believed to be due to forceful straining against an immobile or a non-relaxing pelvic floor together with trauma from digital manipulations as well as ischemic necrosis of the prolapsing rectal mucosa. Spontaneous resolution of SRUS during pregnancy suggests that hormones may play a role in its pathogenesis (21). …”
