Sports and physical activity after cementless total hip arthroplasty with a minimum follow‐up of 10 years

Abstract: The present retrospective cohort study was conducted to compare sporting activity levels before and a minimum of 10 years after primary cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA). A consecutive series of 86 patients with a mean age at surgery of 52 years (range, 21-60 years) was evaluated 11 years after surgery (range, 10-12 years). Pre- and post-operative sporting activities were assessed at routine follow-up using the University of California, Los Angeles activity score and the Schulthess Clinic sports and acti… Show more

“…It is noteworthy that we have achieved 2014 NICE survivorship in our younger, high-risk population, as this group typically presents poor outcomes in THA [2, 9]. Our study produced better outcomes than most THA reports and compare favorably to other smaller, youth-centered resurfacing studies, such as those by Sayeed et al, Haddad et al, and Krantz et al (Table 9) [11, 23, 44].…”

“…Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is durable in elderly populations [1] but does not meet functional demands or durability requirements for younger patients [25]. In 2014, the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) raised their benchmark criteria for hip implants from 90 to 95% 10-year survivorship.…”

“…Previous quantitative analyses have provided variable and inconsistent conclusions on physical activity after THA and TKA [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. However, the current evidence-base has focused on assessing changing participatory levels of sports and exercise, rather than lower levels of physical activity pursuits which may be more typical of the majority of the arthroplasty population [12].…”
