Spread of virus during soccer matches

Abstract: In the present study, the exposure to virus during soccer matches is calculated. Tracking data from 14 elite matches was used. One player in each match was carrying a virus. The exposure score (measured in seconds) was calculated as time spent closer than 1.5m from the infected player or time spent in an exponentially declining zone where the infected player was positioned earlier. The results reveal that, on average, each player was exposed for 87.8s per match.

“…The calculations were performed with one infected player in each game and repeated until all participants had acted as the infected player, as previously described. 25 Moreover, number of contacts was evaluated as the number of times a player entered in DZ, and the time of each entry was noted.…”

“…63 At best this aRCT would be a part of an ongoing integrated intervention for infection control that also includes hospital-based surveillance of MDR bacteria and antimicrobial stewardship programmes. 64 The aRCT is expected to enroll complex patients potentially in need of multiple simultaneous empiric therapies. 65 Thus, the experimental compound will need to be administered on top of all other therapies and may include a combination of several antimicrobials.…”

“…In team sports, personal contact between players is inevitable and a "safe distance" can obviously not be respected. Football players remain at a distance of >1.5 m of another player for the vast majority of the game (8) and encounters are brief (tackling and heading duels). Still, the heavy, unprotected breathing during exercise generates more droplets than normal respiration, increasing the risk of exposure (9).…”
