Sputum- und Bronchialsekretzytologie

Abstract: Cytological diagnosis was achieved in 89 of 206 (43.2%) malignant lung tumours verified histologically. The quality of cytological material, number of examinations, tumour size and differentiation, as well as careful handling of the material and experience of the cytologist, all influenced the rate of false-negative results. Cytological examination of sputum and bronchial secretions gave a higher rate of detecting malignant lung tumours than histological examination of material obtained by bronchoscopy.

“…Except for the small number of small cell carcinomas in our study, brush material had a higher diagnostic yield than sputum samples in all the other tumor types (Table IV). A thorough literature review for sputum 1,5,10,12,13,17,19,22,28,30,31,34,35,38,43,47,49,53,[61][62][63] and for brush cytology 1,8,28,30,41,48,61,62 also supported our findings that squamous cell carcinomas are the type with the highest detection rate by both techniques (Table IV). The main reason for the greater detectability of this tumor type could be that squa- The tumor stage-associated sensitivity of the diagnostic techniques is also of utmost importance in early lung carcinoma detection.…”
