Squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva: Prognostic factors influencing survival

Abstract: One hundred seventy-two cases of patients with squamous cell cancer of the vulva treated at the University of Michigan Medical Center from 1975 to 1988 are reported. The mean age was 66 years with a range of 21 to 101 years. The distribution by stage included Stage I, 65; Stage II, 44; Stage III, 50; and Stage IV, 13 patients. Groin node dissections performed on 145 patients showed negative nodes, 58%; unilateral positive nodes, 28%; and bilateral positive nodes, 14%. The distribution of patients with positive… Show more

“…The five-year overall survival rate is 68%. Survival worsens with an increase in tumour stage, age and nodal stage (8,9) all of which have been established as poor prognostic factors. In addition, molecular markers are needed to enable a better discrimination of more aggressive tumour phenotypes and to potentially facilitate a targeted molecular therapy in the future.…”

“…DISCUSSION Squamous-cell vulvar cancer is a rarely encountered disease, accounting for approximately 4% of all gynaecological malignancies. With appropriate management, patients with vulvar cancer have a 5-year survival rate of 60% to 70% (Hopkins et al, 1991;Hacker, 1994). Advanced-stage tumours develop recurrent disease after initial treatment in up to 70% of cases, with approximately equal distribution of local, regional and distant recurrent disease (Chan and Helm, 1996).…”
