Sr4N[CN2][C2N]: The First Carbodiimide Acetonitriletriide

Abstract: The acetonitriletriide anion C 2 N 3-, the fully deprotonated form of acetonitrile, is stabilized in a pure alkaline earth metal environment in Sr 4 N[CN 2 ][C 2 N]. The heterogeneous reaction of graphite and elemental nitrogen (from decomposed NaN 3 ) with Sr 2 N at 1020 K yields for the first time a phase that contains the two triatomic anions acetonitriletriide C 2 N 3and carbodiimide CN 2 2side by side. Further synthetic routes were likewise successfully tested, including a sodium free approach [a]

“…[27] The measured vibrational frequencies were further confirmed to arise from [CN 2 ] 2ions through comparison with several cyanamides and carbodiimides (Table 3), while particularly the intense stretching vibrations for other three atomic linear ions as, for example, [C 2 N] 3are located at significantly deviating (lower) wave numbers. [36][37][38][39]45] The symmetric, asymmetric, and deformation vibrational frequencies agree well with what has been previously observed for [CN 2 ] 2anions via Raman spectroscopy. [5,11,42] The splitting at roughly 2000 cm -1 is typically seen for cyanamides, but is also seen in multi-cationic carbodiimides.…”
