Stabilization of gamma‐irradiated poly(vinyl chloride) by epoxy compounds. III. Conjugated double bonds and degree of unsaturation in gamma‐irradiated PVC–stabilizer mixtures

Abstract: SynopsisThe concentration of conjugated polyene sequences was studied in y-irradiated PVC with 4% admixture of four epoxy stabilizers: diglycidyl ether of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)propane (I), styrene oxide (1,2-epoxy ethyl benzene) (IV), epoxidized ricinus oil (VI), and epoxidized soybean oil (Drapex 6.8) (VII). As in the former investigations (Papers I and II), the process of the formation of the polyenes occurs in two stages. The concentration of polyene sequences with n double bonds, H , the total … Show more

“…Lerke et al [58] investigated effects of gamma irradiation on pure PVC and PVC stabilized with epoxidized soybean oil, and found that the concentration of conjugated polyene sequences of PVC stabilized with epoxidized soybean oil was lower. Housell [59] investigated the coloration of PVC exposed to gamma radiation.…”

“…The polyene sequences absorb in the region of 300 -600 nm. 15,16 Volka et al 17 studied the effect of thermal stabilizers in the thermal treatment of PVC by IR spectroscopy. Zinc stearate added to PVC are characterized by an absorption band at 1540 cm Ϫ1 , corresponding to the antisymmetrical stretching vibration of the carboxylate group.…”

“…Rate constants of the dehydrochlorination reaction at 140°C for virgin PVC and HCl-treated PVC are 1.66 ϫ 10 Ϫ4 min Ϫ1 and 4.64 ϫ 10 Ϫ4 min Ϫ1 , respectively. Lerke et al 15 investigated effects of gamma irradiation on pure PVC and PVC stabilized with epoxidized soybean oil, and found that the concentration of conjugated polyene sequences of PVC stabilized with epoxidized soybean oil was lower. Housell 21 investigated the coloration of PVC exposed to gamma radiation.…”

“…Use of epoxy plasticizers, otherwise called epoxy costabilizers, is essential in the stabilization of y-sterilized PVC compounds (53)(54)(55)(56)(57)(58)(59). The improvement is generally attributed to the ability of epoxidized oils to act as acid scavengers by absorbing the HC1 generated during PVC degradation.…”
