Stable and Controllable Synthesis of Silver Nanowires for Transparent Conducting Film

Abstract: Silver nanowires without particles are synthesized by a solvothermal method at temperature 150 °C. Silver nanowires are prepared via a reducing agent of glycerol and a capping agent of polyvinylpyrrolidone (M w ≈ 1,300,000). Both of them can improve the purity of the as-prepared silver nanowires. With controllable shapes and sizes, silver nanowires are grown continuously up to 10–20 μm in length with 40–50 nm in diameter. To improve the yield of silver nanowires, the different concentrations of AgNO3 synthesis… Show more

“…With an increase in [OH − ], we observed a decrease in the NiNW bundle diameter from 426 ± 91 down to 306 ± 57 nm ( Table 2). This effect is very similar to the capping action of polyvinylpyrrolidone in the course of AgNW formation [29]. In that case, the polymer wrapped around the nascent NW and caused the preferential addition of metal nanoclusters from the front, which caused an elongation of NW instead of an increase in bundle diameter.…”

“…Although, ethylene glycol is a common reducing agent in the synthesis of AgNW, glycerol was used here as an alternative reducing agent. Glycerol has a higher boiling point (290 ⁰ C) and a higher hydroxyl group content than ethylene glycol which accelerated the wires growth [26,42]. As in other published work, PVP was used to control the growth direction of…”

“…It is well known that for the organic photovoltaic (OPV) device, a transparency of at least 85% and a shee e a ce f e a 15 / a e is needed to fabricate competitive electrical devices. These wires are usually synthesized using the polyol process with ethylene glycol as reducing agent and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as stabilizer [25,26]. In this research, PVP is used as a stabilizer as well as growth enhancer through preferential adsorption on Ag facets leading to the unidirectional growth of the wire.…”

“…They synthesized AgNWs up to 10-20 μm in length and 40-50 nm in diameter without addition of salt mediators, chlorides, and template salts by autoclaving mixtures at 197°C for 9 hr. The autoclave step prevents the oxidization of glycerol in air and consequently formation of acrolein and light-yellow polymer [129]. Li et al synthesized AgNWs as long as 160 μm with 40-85 nm diameter with glycerol as a solvent and a reducing agent and heating at 150°C [130].…”
