Staff experiences of appreciative management in the institutional care of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities – a cross‐sectional study

Abstract: The knowledge of weak systematic management in this study may be utilised in developing management strategies. The managers should use the concept of appreciative management to help young and less experienced nurses to increase their competency and willingness to work in this field.

“…These results are consistent with previous studies in which equality was the area that achieved the highest evaluation from the perspective of intellectual and developmental disability care workers (Astala et al, 2017), pediatric nursing workers (Sirén et al, 2015), and in healthcare organizations in general (Harmoinen et al, 2014). Likewise, systematic management was considered the weakest area from the perspective of intellectual and developmental disability care workers (Astala et al, 2017), and healthcare organizations (Harmoinen et al, 2014). In the study by Sirén et al (2015), the promotion of well-being was the least well implemented category.…”

“…The scale has also been used with staff taking care of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and in paediatric nursing. Although no weaknesses have yet been detected in the instrument (Astala et al, 2016;Hyytia¨inen et al, 2015;Siren et al, 2015), further studies are needed to test this instrument. In particular, changes in contemporary working life require workplaces to show whether their management is appreciative or not.…”

“…The reliability of this tool was good, and the Cronbach alpha coefficient of the instrument varied mostly from 0.852 to 0.986, with the exception of equality between sexes (0.616). In previous studies, these values have varied from 0.79 to 0.97 (Astala, Roos, Harmoinen, & Suominen, ; Harmoinen, Niiranen, Helminen, et al, ). A possible reason for this low alpha coefficient might be that the work of physiotherapists is quite independent.…”
