Stage-based interventions for smoking cessation

Abstract: Based on four trials using direct comparisons, stage-based self-help interventions (expert systems and/or tailored materials) and individual counselling were neither more nor less effective than their non-stage-based equivalents. Thirty-one trials of stage-based self help or counselling interventions versus any control condition demonstrated levels of effectiveness which were comparable with their non-stage-based counterparts. Providing these forms of practical support to those trying to quit appears to be mor… Show more

“…Compared to abrupt cessation, smoking reduction doubles the probability of SC [23,25]. A positive association with SC is reported for intention-to-quit smoking and the confidence level in quitting [22,24,26,27]. Negative beliefs about smoking and health benefit expectancy increase cessation [22,23,24].…”

“…Recruitment strategies were primarily aimed to enroll new users in the web-based intervention "Viva sem Tabaco". "Viva sem Tabaco" is an open-source web-based intervention for smoking cessation, available in seven languages (Portuguese, Spanish, English, Russian, Arabic, Italian, and German); it is fully automated, and its content is based on guidelines for treating smokers (US Department of Health Services, 2008) and meta-analyses published by the "Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group" (Cahill, Lancaster, & Green, 2010;Civljak et al, 2013;Hartmann-Boyce et al, 2013). The intervention content is structured in three major areas according to the user degree of motivation for change.…”
