Stage‐specific expression of proprotein form of hyaluronan binding protein 1 (HABP1) during spermatogenesis in rat

Abstract: The presence of the 34-kDa hyaluronan binding protein 1 (HABP1) on sperm surface and its role in fertilization is already established (Ranganathan et al., 1994: Mol Reprod Dev 38:69-76). In the present communication, we examined the expression of HABP1 in adult rat testis during spermatogenesis. Interestingly, using anti-rHABP1 antibody, we detected a protein of 55 kDa which was present only in testis, but not in other somatic tissues like spleen and liver. However, even in testis, only one transcript of HABP1… Show more

“…p32 is synthesized as a pre protein and is processed by proteolytic cleavage of the N-terminal amino acids containing the mitochondrial signal sequence (27). The pre-protein form of p32 is only expressed in germ cells (28), which clearly justifies the predominant localization of p32 in the mitochondrial matrix.…”

“…HABP1 has been demonstrated to play a role in spermatogenic differentiation. Stage-specific expression of HABP1 precursor during spermatogenesis in the rat (24). The sperm surface HABP1 level was correlated with the degree of sperm motility, an important criterion for fertilization (112).…”

“…17 However no tissue expresses the proprotein form of HABP1 except the germ cells. 18 Another interesting feature of this protein is its diverse localization in different cell types under different physiological conditions in different cellular compartments including mitochondria 19,20 and nucleus 14,21 and is shown to be on the cell surface [22][23][24] and secreted into the extracellular matrix. 25,26 Though the true physiological roles of HABP1 remain to be clarified, it is speculated it may be involved in the cellular trafficking connecting different cellular compartments and the cell surface.…”
