Abstract

Shortages of many of the basic elements for stainless steel production were of primary interest during the past year. Methods for reclaiming critical elements and substituting titanium for niobium in stainless steels were described. Increased interest was shown in sigma phase, its nature, occurrence, and effect on stainless steels. Numerous prominent metallurgists contributed valuable information in this regard. The majority of data on corrosion-and heat-resisting alloys concerned their specific application in industry, although much basic research information was also reported.
